You have probably noticed this. And maybe you thought this was your fault. If you were smarter, or better educated, or something else, everything would be clear. Meanwhile, you go on muddling through life, making a much sense of it as you can, and if nothing makes sense, just doing whatever is easiest.
You have a lot of company. And indeed, the smartest, richest, most powerful people in history have not been much better off, if the truth were known. I hope this makes you feel better. The problem is not you; the problem is reality itself—whatever that is.
We have been lied to. We have been told that reality is reasonable. This is simply not true. Reality does not care a fig about reasonableness, and it is not even clear that it cares about little old us; life is not fair.
We are the ones who want reality to be reasonable, to be understandable. This is a strange obsession; none of our animal relatives are worried about it. None of them seem to worry about anything, actually.
I don’t have an answer to this problem. It’s a bit late to change our genetic wiring, we will just have to live with what we got, including our unreasonable need for making the universe reasonable. But maybe we shouldn’t expect too much—after all, we are only humans. Cockroaches seem to be more in harmony with the universe than we are.
