Pictures made during a trip to Nicaragua on Nov 7-16. Rivas is a town west of Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe is an Island in Lake Nicaragua, and Leon is a historical city, the center of Nicaruagua's liberal culture.
In Rivas. There are a lot of these, they provide employment and they save money. The ride is rough on the cobblestone roads.
Washerwomen at Ometepe, working on a raft off the shore. They cover themselves up so they don't get sunburned.
Toilet and shower at Playa Volcan. The front were just flaps of cloth. We had running water, but no electricity. The pumps were operated by a battery.
I saw something strange on a leaf on a beach walk at Playa Volcan. I looked closely, it was a nocturnal spider in its daytime disquise. The big eyes are on the right. The legs are all tucked up. It's about an inch long.
Interior of dorm at Playa Volcan, made of native construction. It was dark inside, and there were no lights.
Martin and I waited for two buses, and neither one came. We found out the next day that these buses didn't exist.
Road sign for a primative resort I stayed at for three days. The sunset photos were taken from there.
Santo in procession in Altagracia on Ometepe. This was accompanied by young men waving branches, and some very loud drums.
Mural in La Posada del Doctor, a neat little garden hotel in Leon. The mural is a copy of a famous painting. Surgens in those days were well-dressed.
Detail of Leon mural, showing health center. Maybe the nurse is inserting a thermometer, but she sure looks serious.
This was an execution chamber inside the Fortin. Three people were executed at a time by a firing squad. You can the the bullet marks in the wall. There is a blood cachment basin for each room, where the blood is collected and sent to a drain system. There were four of these chambers altogether. Hundreds of people must have died here.
Most of the burial ground is now used for the city dump.
El Fortin. This military strongpoint was captured by the Sandinistas during the 1978-79 revolution, when they took control of the country.
This is the altar at La Recolección cathedral in Leon. This altar is devoted to Mary. Joseph has a small statue on the left of the altar, but Jesus does not appear at all. La Recolección means: collecting, gathering, harvesting
