Science has been rejected by the post-modern world as avidly as the modern world accepted it. But few are aware of this, and most would deny it. This is because the post-modern world exists in two layers: a superficial layer, which it is aware of, and a fundamental layer which it is not. In this way it resembles Latin American culture, which only accepted modernity superficially, while retaining its pre-modern culture as its core identity. This is also true of Islamic culture.
The post-modern world has rejected the Scientific Revolution fundamentally, while continuing to pay it lip service - to avoid the discomfort and pain of acknowledging this fundamental loss. In the same way it has rejected the Enlightenment - without even knowing that it once existed - or that it was important. They have no idea of what it was, they never heard of it at school, on television - or of course, at work. This is a also fundamental loss.
It is almost as ignorant of science, a subject it avoids because it is too hard. It prefers something more entertaining, something lighter. It thinks of science as something that produces wealth - once the business world gets to use it, of course. Anything labeled science that does not do this is not really science, but a perversion of it.
In the same way, anything labeled science that conflicts with the market economy is not acceptable - notably any environmentalism. They still give it lip service - but fight any implementation at the national or global levels - the only way environmentalism can work.
Science has also been affected by the trend to authoritarianism, sometimes known as the shift to the right - or simply conservatism. These people expect science to be some kind of authority on how the world is - and to enforce these findings. They want it to be some kind of religion, which it most definitely is not. And if it is not this, they reject it.
I am watching now a course about black matter and black energy - pure science. The professor carefully explains all the reasons why this seems to exist - going over the reasons why it might not exist too. I am sitting there realizing that I am seeing science in action - and also realizing that most people are entirely uninterested. They are only interested in acquisition: getting more - and this does not include this weird science stuff.
