Not only that, it also makes you more socially desirable, more attractive to other people. People's hand-held electronic possessions have now become part of themselves, just like their clothing, home and car.
A cell phone is nice, but it is not something you can show off to anyone. When they first came out, everybody wanted to have one of the new tiny ones, but this fad has passed. Now they have so many new things they are boring - except for thieves, of course (a real problem in Central America, where people will kill to get the latest pair of sneakers).
A smart phone has a decent-sized display and a speaker, and can perform all kinds of tricks to impress your friends.
However, if you are not into impressing people what good are they?
I never got into cell phones because I hate talking on the phone. The one I have now, a $9 Samsung from Verizon is more of a leash than anything else. I got it for emergencies but haven't had one in the 4 years I've had it. But I do use it. I've never come close to using up my minutes. However, these "smart-phones" look interesting with all the "killer apps", the camera and the email access, but I'm afraid I'd never use their full potential. Too old, I guess.
